WiRE's Candid Coffee Series
#2 Coffee with Claims – Most Difficult Claims
Sponsored by Singapore Reinsurers' Association and Allianz Re
On 10 September, Allianz Re's office at CapitaSky on Robinson Road played host to Women in Reinsurance's (WiRE) second Candid Coffee talk of 2024 – and what a success it was! The session was a treat for both those new to claims or seasoned professionals featuring three distinguished speakers from Allianz Commercial spotlighting claims handling and management, and salvage adjustment. We were pleased to have Charlotte Field, Regional Head of Short-Tail Claims, Grace Staiti hailing all the way from New York, Senior Salvage Adjuster and Erica Low, Senior Claims Handler.
We kicked off with a warm welcome from Mr. Kenrick Law, Deputy Chairman of SRA and CEO of Allianz Re Asia Pacific, followed by an opening address from Ms. Aisyah Fuad, Convenor of WiRE. She introduced WiRE and the session as part of our SpeakEasy initiative, highlighting how these coffee sessions provide a fantastic platform for women speakers to share their expertise.
It started with a "know your speakers" segment where speakers gave the audience a glimpse of their preferences through a "this or that" section – Dancing or Singing? Coffee or Tea? – far simpler choices than they would have to make in their work and set a relaxed atmosphere to dive into the world of claims and salvage adjustment.
Insightful Presentations
In the first half of the session, Erica and Charlotte discussed the challenges they face in claim handling, ranging from delays in claim notifications from the insured to navigating legal jurisdictions and cultural differences. They presented several fascinating case studies, including the Brisbane floods and the Christchurch earthquake in 2011, as well as a complex fire loss case that led to some changes in regulations and enhanced fire protection requirements by the authorities.
The second half was led by Grace, who perked the audience's interest with her role as a salvage adjuster, boosting recoveries from what may have been discarded or undervalued assets. She presented several intriguing salvage management cases involving luxury cars, heavy trucks, heavy equipment, and even food. Her unique role and experience captivated the audience, leading to an extended discussion after her presentation and during the networking session.
The event concluded with networking time over light refreshments as with any WiRE event. A big thank you to our speakers for their insightful contributions – we loved hearing from you all!
