Dive In Festival is back from 21st to 23rd September, and WiRE is thrilled to be taking part as a support organisation this year. We’re joining AXA XL and AWARE, Singapore’s leading gender equality group, to highlight the growing issue of Family Domestic Violence around the world.
A Pandemic within a Pandemic: Workplace Response to Family Domestic Violence
As millions of people work from home, another pandemic is growing - family domestic violence (FDV). Prolonged periods of confinement working from home, closure of schools and childcare facilities, coupled with the stress of financial uncertainty, build domestic tensions. The UNFPA expects domestic violence to increase globally by 20%. In Singapore, AWARE's Women's Helpline saw a 137% surge in calls related to family violence in May 2020 compared to May 2019.
Work is a huge part of our lives and at a time when the home has become the workplace, it has become clearer to employers that family domestic violence impacts the workplace and is a workplace issue. The productivity of workers who experience FDV is severely reduced. Moreover, studies show that a high proportion of FDV victims confide in their managers and co-workers about the situation. If we don't deal with these issues in workplaces, we’re missing a major opportunity to help our colleagues.
Join Corinna Lim, Executive Director of AWARE as she shares insights about how to raise awareness on the support system available for women and men facing family stress and domestic violence, and how we as colleagues/friends can spot the signs displayed by those in distress and help them.
